When interaction with computer science dates back

When I think about
advancement of science and technology, one of the most futuristic is the
prospect of machine super intelligence –machines matching humans in general
intelligence.

For decades,
simulating the human brain by computers has been religiously pursued, yet the
results are still not close to what nature has made .Researchers like Pedro
Domingos have proposed for the ultimate learning machine which derives all
knowledge – past, present, and future from data by a single, universal learning
algorithm and rightly call the algorithms as – “The Master Algorithm”. If such an algorithm is possible, inventing
it would be one of the greatest scientific achievements of all time and
singularity is indeed near, as rightly argued by Ray Kurzweil in his book
“Singularity is near”. This invention will have 
huge implications for world economy , it can revolutionize scientific
research , invent everything else we need , discover  patterns in nature  provided enough of right kind of data is  made available and by using advanced
algorithms for data mining  and machine
learning, hidden trends and patterns may emerge that may advance our understanding
of our world.

I feel excited
about this possibility of super-intelligence, where machine intelligence
compliments human intelligence to create an age of Artificial Intelligence .I
want to contribute to that age of evolution. This motivates me to pursue M.S.
degree in Computer Science (with emphasis on Machine Learning).

My long and
enjoyable interaction with computer science dates back to my school days, where
I was introduced to graphical user interfaces, operating systems and enjoyed drawing
graphical figures/recurring patterns, building miniature applications
simulating real world systems using Java. My fascination for programming has
steered my career towards computer science .I have earned my undergraduate
degree in Computer Science at the CVSR College of Engineering, affiliated to Jawaharlal Technological
University, Hyderabad. Here, I studied electives such as web technologies, cloud
computing, computer graphics, information retrieval systems. Having been exposed to the various facets of Computer Science, I
found Theoretical Computer science most intellectually satisfying and
simulating , particularly courses like ” Design and Analysis of Algorithms
“.Laboratory work provided deeper insight into various intricacies of computation
and  programming , this encouraged me to
continuously learn and apply theoretical concepts  and that is one of the reasons for
maintaining high scores  in oral
examinations , practical examinations 
and my final year project .

During my third
year , I was interested to do more of online courses for keeping myself updated
about interesting advancements in technology .While I was searching for courses
, I came across one with a weird title – “Learning from data” .So, I was
curious enough to start the course. Initial lectures were quite invigorating
because they talked about using machine learning for predicting stock markets,
recommendations for movies ,predicting a movie’s success based on reviews and
ratings .But, I couldn’t complete the course because it was of advanced
material.

 

Further, during my final year project, I
had the opportunity to build a web based simulation of an intelligent system which
detects road accidents, notify them through vehicular networks, and estimate
their severity based on the concept of data mining and knowledge inference. It
was during the course of project work, while researching on intelligent system ,
I was fascinated by the breadth of applications of machine learning and the
capability of learning algorithms.

 

Even after obtaining my Bachelor’s degree 
and during a demanding work schedule, I continued my study by reading books
such as “Programming Collective Intelligence “and through online courses such
as Machine Learning by Andrew Ng, which was a great introduction to ML with
rigorous coursework, during which I have implemented neural network in octave
for digit recognition and Bayesian Statistics by Herbert Lee which provides mathematical intuition
behind some of the learning algorithms.

Industrial exposure would present an
opportunity to apply my knowledge to engineer real world systems, gain insight
into the best practices and an opportunity to interact and learn from
experienced professionals’ .So, I have decided to join at Tata Consulting
Services Limited (TCS) after my graduation as an Assistant System Engineer. I
worked on developing enterprise web application for one of the largest
healthcare service providers based out in U.S. I was actively involved in
developing and delivering nine  users’
cases across three  modules .It was a
rich learning experience , I pushed my limits ,rapidly prototyped capabilities
, delivered use cases as per timelines and was appreciated by the client for
the same. I also worked on application level framework development, rule engine
frameworks and gained insightful knowledge on design patterns, enterprise
integration patterns, application level designing etc. All these experiences
have made me a strong implementer familiar with software development
technologies and frameworks like spring, ORM, Apache CXF, JBOSS Drools.

 

 

Given the exposure and a desire to be
part of the next generation of machine learning researchers, I look forward to
pursuing a career in
research and development by prototyping/building useful models, frameworks and
developing cutting edge software particularly in the field of machine learning.
A Master’s degree would also present an opportunity to be part of prestigious
residency programs like Google Brain , Facebook AI where, working on diverse projects
would be an unique learning experience .To achieve my research and career
goals, I hope to study in an environment filled with active learners and
creative ideas. is famous for solid training in
engineering and for having abundant research in the field of machine learning
.In addition , interacting with members of your research group will give me an
invaluable opportunity to broaden my horizons and later work in many research
areas that I cannot anticipate at the moment. Given my background, I believe I
am in a good position to make crucial contributions in such pursuits.
