What are the effects of meditation on people?

When people heard words like meditation, yoga, pilates; they imagine a room with a group of people doing some movements by following an instructor in a gym or a quiet place in nature to relax. Nowadays, people try to find other rehabilitation activities due to the fact that they overwork and want to give a break and meditation might be one of them in order to feel rested and freshen up. However, it may have other effects on being healthy. It is found that there are two beneficial effects of meditation which can be categorized as physiological and mental abilities.

To begin with, meditation can be effective in physiological health in two ways which are nervous system and high blood pressure. First of all, human’s nervous system makes them what they are because it gives the ability to control many things in the body. As a result, the nervous system becomes a major thing for humans. Several subgroups including in the nervous system take the role of occurring somatic functions such as breathing, digestion, swearing, and heartbeat. Meditation’s effects show up in parasympathetic and sympathetic system’s working. As a consequence, meditation increases parasympathetic activity which it slows down heartbeats, breathing and causes to extend vessels providing transfer of flowing blood easier while the sympathetic system manages ‘fight or flight response’ resulting in higher heartbeats, frequent breathing, and narrower blood vessels. How meditation function or response in many different scenarios are still on researching by more than 50 clinicians.(Dobson, 2011).  As it can be seen, by this changes in the nervous system, people may act a little bit slowly. For example, when someone feels in a rush, they may choose meditation to give a break. Also, reducing high blood pressure is another effect of meditation. Schneider(2014) explained that  the beneficial effects of meditation being significant in other related positive causes obtained by researches, and agreed on American Heart Association’s last year published announcement (as cited in Schneider,2014) , as a beneficial activity meaning that meditation may be seen as a new dealing way with high blood pressure by doctors as a result of continuous researches for many years. This means that not only there are lots of positive consequences of meditation on the body but also in the future, a way of dealing with issues of hypertension might be meditation.

In addition to physiological effects of meditation, there are two positive outcomes of it on mental health which are better focusing and enhancing creativity. The first main effect of meditation may be focusing. “…Studies show that meditation training can curb our tendency for distraction, strengthening our ability to stay focused…”(as cited in Seppala,2015, para.13) . In other words, focusing skills may be improved by doing some meditative movements because meditation has an effect on concentration. Therefore if those methods are applied to someone who has difficulty to understand because of distractibility, results might be positive. Secondly, there may be a link between meditation and enhancing creativity. “…Research on creativity suggests that we come up with our greatest insights and biggest breakthroughs when we are in a meditative and relaxed state of mind.”(as cited in Seppala,2015, para.9). By practicing those exercises, individuals can be inspired and succeed in careers related to art like writing, painting, music, etc. because they may think independently using their imagination and have the ability to express their feelings. Furthermore, in case of being out of ideas, meditation might help other people, too.

In a nutshell, physiological and mental abilities can be affected by meditation, in a good way. which also it influences human nervous system and blood pressure physiologically as well as there are some results appearing caused by meditation which is emphasized on mental abilities such as focusing and enhancing creativity. Learning those strategies may help humans’ life in different ways and be useful for their relaxation and their reaching goals. If people are aware of meditation’s effects, they might come to that so demanding desirable relaxing moments and opportunities may be shown up.
