These days, social media has become very much vital to the
average human being. After the rise of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, social
media is something society can not seem to live without and like everything
else, it has its positive side and its negative side. This report is going to
detail each side of social media.

2.     The
positives

Social media has changed the way we as a species communicates
with the rest of the world. With the use of social media, we are able to create
new relationships with people who live thousands of miles away, and strengthen
those relationships by having places such as Facebook Messenger to talk in
private. As well as introducing people to new acquaintances, social media allows
people to reconnect with those they have not seen in a considerable amount of
time. Sites like Skype allow the elderly to talk to family they may not have
had contact with for a while and helps keep up to date with their lives.

With the times changing, many people are feeling freer to
talk about and raise awareness of more and more current social and political
issues, like that of mental health. Social media gives those who want to speak
out a platform to be able to bring attention to any information, such as personal
life experiences, to let others they aren’t alone. (Furr, 2018)

Social media has helped highlight many other taboo topics,
such as LGBT stories – like that of 26th June, 2015, when the
Supreme Court in America declared gay marriage to be legal in all 50 states.

Social media reports on different global happenings, whether
it be in times of crisis like when Hurricane Irma happened in August and
September of 2017. In these times, many social media sites like Twitter, offer
safety information like phone numbers for shelter and different types of
rescue.  As well as worldwide issues, social
media can help people keep up to date in real time with political news, for
when laws pass or when elections happen. (Rupert, 2018)

3.     The Negatives

Like everything else, social media has its negative sides.
Since many users are young and impressionable, a lot of what is put on social
media may be highly influential. Stunts that are often posted on social media
may be recreated – some with a fatal ending. An example of this is when a
teenager tried jumping for a rail in a “snapchat stunt”,  but instead fell to his death. (Salo, 2017)

Health issues can be caused by social media, as some may grow
addicted to the site they enjoy most. Sometimes this goes so far that the
individual completely cuts themselves off from reality. Other health issues may
include weight gain and others that are directly related to this, though these
issues are mostly from gaming related social media. Depression from
cyberbullying is a growing issue within teenagers who are aged 12-18, as it is
easy to make fake profiles without a trace, and with some sites offering
anonymity to different users, the issue is ever growing. In a 2015 study, it
was shown that 23% of teenagers were victims of cyberbullying and 15% were the
bullies. (Pappas, 2018)

4.     How social
media affects business

Ever-growing social media means that businesses are becoming
more and more reliant on it as time passes. Businesses thrive on social media,
as a lot of customer base is on social media. Through this, businesses can
conduct different types of research into their customer base, by advertising
polls, surveys, case studies and more. (Holmes, 2018)

The various different platforms help businesses better
understand what their customers wants and needs are, in order to provide better
products online. (England and Finney, 2007)

Small
businesses are some of those who are affected positively when using social media
to market to users rather than try to try and go up against bigger companies,
which is often detrimental. Networking with social media is cheap, quick and
easy so won’t make a huge dent in the business’ budget, but helps to build up a
name for themselves.
