This Youtube clip that comes from the movie Shrek 2, portrays the scene where Shrek finally meets Fiona’s parents who are apart of the royal family. Shrek 2 is a movie of fantasy and romance that was produced in 2004 by Andrew Adamson, Kelly Asbury, and Conrad Vernon. Picking up where the first Shrek movie left off, Shrek and Fiona are now happily married and living in Shrek’s house in the swamp with a talking donkey. Soon after, the King and Queen hear of their daughters marriage and they invite them to the royal palace or the kingdom called Far Far Away to celebrate, also where Fiona’s parents will meet shrek. However, Fiona’s parents are assuming that their daughter has married prince charming but instead she married an ogre and has also been cursed into an ogre herself. After a long voyage, Shrek and Fiona are greeted by a cheering crowd which immediately turns quiet once they exit the carriage. The King and Queen discover that Shrek is an ogre and immediately oppose the mariage. In response, the king turns to the Fairy Godmother, who is also the mother of Prince charming, to try to separate Fiona and Shrek and instead band together Fiona with Prince Charming. With the help of a secret potion that is made to help Fiona fall in love with Prince charming, the father soon realizes that his daughters love should not be forced upon and fails to give Fiona the potion during a set up event. Soon after Shrek and Fiona are reunited and are eventually able to wed.Auguste Comte is a French Philosopher who founded sociology and became interested in the way society form’s itself in relation to the laws and customs we follow. He focuses a lot on the “laws of society” and believes that those who are accustomed to these laws have a better understanding of the key principles of social statistics and social dynamics. Social statistics is the progressive change in social statics in which social dynamics is the base of or where the direction of change is going. Comote would view this clip from Shrek and focus on the fact that Fiona comes from a royal family, therefore, her parents had an idea of how her fairytale life would work out. They wanted her to be saved by prince charming in a castle where he would wake her up and rescue her from the dragon, in which they would live happily ever after. Instead, Shrek, who is an ogre, saved her and they end up falling in love and living in his swamp. Fiona’s parents didn’t accept their marriage at first because she was thrown into the position of having to mary prince charming and now has to prove to her parents that love should not be forced. Therefore, Comte would focus on Fiona finding true love from someone who is not apart of the royal family, which brings change to the social norm she lives in and creates balance.Karl Marx is a German Philosopher who focused on social classes in society. He studied the conflict perspective and believes that the system of the capitalists and the working class/ poor, created class conflict because of the unequal distribution of resources among the two. These systems are created by material resources (money, land, and property), social resources (family connections, and social networking), and cultural resources (education, beliefs, religion, and knowledge). One’s social class has power and control over others. Therefore, those who are apart of the upper class, control means of production and our overall society. Also, in Fiona’s case, the existing social structure or social status she was born in is used to maintain her inferior positions, which is why her parents were against her marrying Shrek. The King and Queen believed that if their daughter married an ogre, their social status would go down. Therefore, the king tried setting Fiona up with Prince charming so she could live within their social norm and keep their position in society. However, this change is social classes created equality and stability. Emile Durkheim, who is another French Philosopher, focused on the relationship between individual with in society. He studied social order and assumed that society progresses in matters of time once it accepts the challenges it faces. Durkheim envisioned society as a living organism that contains components for functional stability that work together to operate the overall organism. However, when one component fails, the others work together to adapt and fill in the void of the fallen component. Therefore, all components depend on each other. An institution can only exist because of the backboard of other functioning roles in society. Durkheim would view this clip and state that Shrek and Fiona come from two different states of mind. Fiona comes from the royal family where she is surrounded by crowds of people in which she meets and greets on a daily basis. Where as, Shrek comes from a swap that is isolated, therefore, he never really comes in contact with others. Durkheim would come to the conclusion that Shrek is an angry ogre because he lacks social connection with others. The paradigm that is most represented in the video is the conflict theory. Shrek 2 shows that the society they live in is controlled by domination, authority, and power. The social class distinction between Fiona and Shrek create conflict and is frowned upon by Fiona’s parents. At first Fiona believed that they way she was rescued was completely wrong and gets mad a Shrek for rescuing her. Shrek takes her back to his swamp where they completely ignore each other for a couple of days. Eventually, they start talking and end up falling in love. Fiona follows her wants and desires to mary Shrek and opposes the path she was given according to her social status.
