The word slavery cannot only be defined as the owning of one person by another person, but it is also known to be one of the greatest contributions to the history of the U.S. When slavery had just begun to evolve the United States were known as colonies of the New World. In 1619, Dutch introduce slavery to America, starting the seeds of a slavery system that developed into a nightmare of abuse and torture that would eventually divide the nation. Slavery was practiced in America throughout the American colonies in the 17-18th centuries. By 1850, about 3.2 million slaves labored in the United States, 1.8 million of whom worked in the cotton fields (OpenStax). Slaves faced arbitrary power abuses from whites, but they can sometimes cope with whats going on. For example, slaves would spend time with family, they would they would honor their ancestors as part of their religion. Other ways were that they often gathered in secret to sing, pray, and preach and formed their own religious Communities. Slavery in America began in the 17th century and it was continued to practice for about next 250 years by the colonies and states. The majority of the slaves were Africa, the slaves worked in the production of tobacco crops and later, cotton (OpenStax). With the invention of the cotton gin in 1793 along with the growing demand for the product in Europe, the use of slaves in the south became the basis of its economy. Most of the slaves lived on large farms or small plantation. slaveholder owned less than 50 slaves, slaves children from learning how to read and write. Most of the slave female will experience sexual abuse from their masters. Originally slaves were brought from Africa, but by the time of the Civil War many people were born into slavery and knew no other life. The southern laws did not allow slaves marriages, sometimes their master allows them to get married but sometimes slaves couples faced the prospect of being sold away to different buyers. Children were often take away from their parents and sold. Slaves parent show their children the best way to survive under slavery. This meant teaching them to be discreet, submissive and guarded around whites. Many slaves endure much pain as they work, but they can sometimes cope with whats going on. For example, they keep a network alive to help spread information and thought ways to deal with severe stresses of slave life. They also sang as they worked, music was also an essential way for them to survive slavery. Another way they would cope is that slave will mix the African and American culture tother to make their own. Slaves suffered extremely high mortality. Half of all slave childrents died during their first year of life, twice the rate of white children. Only 4 of every 100 slaves could expect to live to 60 due to their poor treatment and diet. The expansion of the United States slave was impacted, With the expansion of slavery into new territories and states, there was increased demand for slaves. Since the importation of slaves from outside the United States was banned, the demand for slaves increased and prices went up. Higher costs meant that masters took better care of their slaves. This was helpful for those states that produced more slave children than they needed but it also led to the separation of families when excess slaves were sold. Personally, slavery was morally wrong to do. Now slavery has been legally abolished in the U.S. of America for more than a century. Now all descendants of a slave are now free people. Nothing can be done to repair or correct the wrongs of slavery. No matter how much time goes by, slavery will always be a ghost in America’s past, spooking anyone who looks back. Now all American need to look forward where slavery doesn’t exist and everyone is equal.
