Researchers affect reaction times of participants during

Researchers at University of North Carolina
examined the effect of sleep deprivation on cognitive functioning in vigilance
and memory tasks and the effect of single bout, low intensity on cognitive functioning
following sleep deprivation. It was hypothesized that cognitive performance would
decrease under sleep deprived conditions, but acute exercise would relieve
detrimental effects. Healthy volunteers (n=24, 20-30 years old) from
undergraduate and graduate classes participated in 48 hours of data collection.

Actigraph accelerometers were given to each participant to monitor their sleep
the night prior to deprivation (Evening 2) and to ensure compliance with abstaining
from exercise. Cognitive tests were conducted the morning after normal sleep (Morning
1) and after deprivation (Morning 2). Also on Morning 2, participants underwent
intervention, either performing a single 15-minute interval of low intensity
cycling (exercise group) or sitting still on the cycle ergometer for the 15-minute
interval (control, no exercise group). Following intervention, all participants
underwent a computer administered cognitive battery consisting of two
psychomotor vigilance tasks (PVT a and b) and three Sternberg memory tasks. It
was found that sleep deprivation did not significantly affect reaction times of
participants during PVTa but did increase reaction time during PVTb. Responses
to Sternberg memory tasks were not significant and results of the cognitive testing
from Morning 1 to Morning 2 did not change. It appeared that no significant
differences were observed reaction times or accuracy in PVT or Sternberg memory
tasks between the exercise and control group. This suggests that sleep
deprivation has a negative effect on psychomotor vigilance but does not affect function
of working memory. It was also observed that single bout, low intensity neither
improves nor impairs cognitive performance.
