As soon as I say I am from Los Angeles County, immediately many
minds go to the ideas of smog, trash, famous people live there, and just being overcrowded
in general. While all of those are somewhat true, not a lot of people think
about the marine life especially those that are living in the Santa Monica Bay
and the challenges that include overuse, contamination, and habitat
destruction. Santa Monica Bay is considered the boundary for the Westside of
Los Angeles downtown and the Southern Bay areas. Many people financially rely
on and appreciate all of what this marine ecosystem has to offer, so
organizations like the Bay Foundation, and Audubon Society work with the Santa
Monica community and city to provide a sustainable and healthy marine ecosystem;
whether that is creating new policies that deal with the effects of global
warming or habitat destruction to tourism and the different types of recreation
that are offered.

            The six
economic sectors that rely on the marine’s resources include tourism and
recreation, offshore mineral resources, ship and boat building, marine
transportation, marine construction (dredging of the harbors), and living
resources. A report published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration records “tourism and recreation is the largest of California’s
six ocean-dependent sectors, accounting for 39 percent of the ocean economy’s
GDP ($17.6 billion), 75 percent of the ocean economy’s employment (368,000),
and 46 percent of the ocean economy’s wages ($8.7 billion) in 2012. This sector
also substantially impacts the national economy. (The National
Significance of California’s Ocean Economy, 2015)”.

The coastline of Santa Monica has
been under the State Coastal Act as a protected coastal zone as of 1976. Under
this statue it is required by law that the beach town adopt a policy that
preserves and supports, recreation, beach views, environmental resources,
quality of the water and the effects of climate change on the rise of sea
level. The City of Santa Monica decided that it needed to adopt guidelines that
focused on policies that would promote a more sustainable future, as well as
address the issue of rising sea levels, “City Planning and Office of
Sustainability and the Environment staff forged partnerships with several
environmental organizations to examine issues and potential policy action in
light of new scientific data predicting significant coastline impacts all along
the California coast by the end of this century. (Bar-El, 2018)”.

As well as partnering with multiple
environmental agencies, the City of Santa Monica has also reached out to the
public through various types of workshops, and community groups for a better
understanding of a more “”people-focused” public access approach to ensure a
higher quality beach visitor experience in Santa Monica. (Local Coastal Plan Update., 2018)”. These workshops have included
different ways to get commute to the beach whether that is the bus system,
biking, or even just walking to help ease the congestion and environmental
demands.
