Analysis of data from a survey of 3355 young people (aged 15/16 years), carried out in 13 co-educational English secondary schools (as part of the RIPPLE study), showed that the majority of girls, and about one-third of boys, would like some or all of their sex education to be delivered in single-sex groups. (Strange, Oakley, Forrest, 2010) This analysis shows that the student themselves would prefer a study profile which is focused in a single-sex group or single-sex education institute. The debate on whether parents should consider this study preference has been going on since ages ago, weighing both the pros and cons of single-sex education. Concerns regarding the education sector is very crucial as the foundation of every country is based on its education. Single-sex education is the best way in developing a child’s learning profile as it avoids competition and inequality between both genders.One advantage of implementing single-sex education is that the education can broaden the educational prospects of both boys and girls. In other words, single-sex education can break gender stereotypes of boys and girls in all sectors primarily in performance in education (Bigler, Signorella, 2011). To illustrate, girls are free of pressure to compete with boys for ‘male-dominated’ subjects such as in mathematics and physics. Likewise, boys could also venture into ‘female-classified’ interests such as music and poetry which is not often pursued in mix-gendered schools where they maybe coy on that matter. Accordingly, they would prevail with better whether by performance academically or by means of grasping a new skill and more experience. For example, one mother whose daughter has attended a girls-only school for three years, shares her experience on the Great Schools parent community: “I feel that the single gender environment has given her a level of confidence and informed interest in math and science that she may not have had otherwise” (Stanberry, 2014). As a consequence, quality of students’ performance in education is assured and also the child’s learning profile would be much complete since there are no barriers in pursuing their interests.Another advantage in implementing single-sex education is that there is more gender specific curriculum can be tailored in classes. Men and women can pursue any interest or occupation, but have to mind the gulf between essential natures of girls and boys argues for separate classrooms or schools for some, with gender specific instructional method of learning as mention by Sax and Gurian (Liben 2015; Signorella and Bigler 2013b). For example, girls are often empowered to be leaders while boys on the other hand are thought the method of collaboration. With the suitable environment, students will quickly adapt and feel comfortable venturing into non-traditional subjects. For girls, subjects like mathematics, woodwork and computers comes into play. For boys, subjects like orchestra, arts and humanities would be venture under single-sex settings. Thus, students tend to perform well in the examinations. Based on a research done by Great Lakes Centre, there is a significant difference in success of students between single-sex schools and mix-gendered schools (Bracey, 2006). This research provides crucial evidence in the proof that single-sex education builds a more complete child’s learning profile with the help of gender specific curriculums implemented.Single-sex education also gives an advantage by curbing disturbances and lessen the formation of cliques. In particular, students often regard the opposite sex as a distraction when they are in a mixed-gendered school. In single-sex schools, the students would not have to impress the opposite sex or portray different look to maintain reputation. For example, a boy is definitely distracted if a cute girl walks by an vice versa. In single-sex schools, the students are able to put full concentration and participate in classes without such distractions. Furthermore, there is lesser formation of cliques in single-sex schools. (Carey, Donaghue, Broderick, 2013). For girls they would not have to worry about looking popular, which is a common concern in high schools. For boys, they usually are perceived to be more rough with a boys hazed situation, but the actually don’t as they would not have to look cool by having cliques. This proves to have a major plus point as students have a better studying environment. Hence providing a more complete learning profile.Not everything gives an advantage in implementing single-sex education. One of the major disadvantages of the single-sex education is that it unintentionally promotes poor social skills and a poor social development. (Bigler, Signorella, 2011). When these schools segregate the students, they may think that their gender is inferior or better than the opposite. Not only that, the students miss opportunities to work together and develop vital social skills which indeed is major in our ever-growing society. In the future, this can lead to problems in forming relationships between both genders when the students grow into adults. It is also believed that the females could not develop their masculine side and the male could not develop their feminine side. As a result, it creates less sympathy and comprehension towards the opposite sex. Even though, girls enrol in sports and boys enrol in music or arts, it only gives knowledge and part of the child’s learning profile. When boys and girls coexist in the same educational institute, the mix around and their learning profile would be complete in the sense where they interact with the opposite gender more often.In a nutshell, single-sex education leads to building a complete child’s learning profile through breaking gender stereotypes, implementing gender specific curriculum, curbing disturbances and lessen formation cliques but not neglecting producing students with poor social skills. Though weighing the pros and cons had been a debate ongoing till date, however parents do need to make the positive step first which is undoubtedly enrolling their child into single-sex education. This crucial choice is the major puzzle piece in ensuring the quality of education in our country.
